hellcats

In 1720, two of the only women ever convicted of piracy–Anne Bonny and Mary Read–were captured and tried. After sentencing, Mary died of a fever in prison. Anne Bonny vanished from history. No execution, no death record: nothing. What is believed about their lives now is almost entirely conjecture, and unprovable if you dig deep enough. Inspired by fact and woven together by fiction, HELLCATS imagines Anne and Mary’s meeting, unexpected love, and inevitable loss of one another. In the absence of truth, would it be so bad to pretend?

A staged reading of Hellcats presented by the Road Theatre on Monday, May 11.
